I hoped Quest Achill would show me how far I had come, in reality it showed me how far I had to go. Again, Ger stood beside me on the start line. This time we were also joined by a fellow adventure racer we had become friendly with at GFW, Ed. There was a short run to the kayak after which we would start running along the beach and the race would really begin. At the end of the beach there was a mountain to climb and it was when I started going up that I first thought this doesn’t feel right. By the time I was going back down the mountain and heading towards my bike I felt awful. This wasn’t the new beginning I was hoping for. It started raining and I felt worse. Every spin of the pedals on the bike was pushing me further into misery. When I finally finished the race, I went straight into the food tent and stood in the corner shivering uncontrollably. Even though I had finally gotten one over on Ger, I couldn’t enjoy it. I got my gear and made my way back to the hotel and to bed. I would spend the next three days in bed. This was not the way it was supposed to go.
